Talk synopsis

Ants And Elephants, An Introduction to GPUs, CPUs and the Future of Computing

GPUs have evolved to be very flexible computing devices which now do much more than the simple 3D renderings they were originally designed for. They are increasingly being used for tasks traditionally computed on a CPU, and can give astounding performance boosts, especially for the kind of computation used in post production. This talk, for a general audience, will give a broad overview of the two types of devices and discuss the implications for the future of computing. The Foundry has implemented various effects on the GPU yielding massive performance gains over CPU equivalents, some of which the speaker will demonstrate.
